COM-B, or sussing out what’s stopping you

What’s stopping someone doing what you need them to? This is a handy way to find out.

How do you use it?

The C stands for ‘capability’: are they able to do it? Then it’s ‘opportunity’: do they have the spaces and places they need for it? Next, ‘motivation’: do they want to do it? If you get all those things working, then you get B: the right behaviour.

Where can you learn more about it?

This model was created by scientists at UCL who originally called it ‘the behavioural change wheel’ – you can find the write-up in Implementation Science.
